Eliot was once a part of Kittery and was known as the North Parish of Kittery, the Upper Parish and Sturgeon Creek. It was named after Robert Eliot, a member of The Provincial Council of New Hampshire. Eliot separated from Kittery and incorporated under its present name in 1810.
Eliot is a quiet, residential town, ideally situated along the banks of the Piscataqua River, just minutes from downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, approximately one hour north of Boston, Massachusetts and 45 minutes south of Portland, Maine.
This rural community continues to follow in the tradition of its forefathers with the preservation of environmental and historical assets and the pursuit of economic growth. The approximately 6,000 residents enjoy Eliot's natural charm throughout the year at the town's three parks. Boating and cross-country skiing are among the favorite leisure activities here.
