"The Kennebunks" consist of the side by side villages of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, both
situated along the shores of small rivers and both claiming a portion of rocky coast. The region was first settled in the mid-1600's and flourished after the American Revolution when ship captains, boat builders and properous merchants constructed imposing, solid homes. The Kennebunks are famed for their striking historical architecture and expansive beaches. Kennebunk was first settled about 1620. The town developed as a trading center and later a shipbuilding and shipping center with light manufacturing. To the Abenaki Indians, Kennebunk meant "the long cut bank", presumably the long bank behind Kennebunk Beach. It claims to be "the only village in the world so named". Kennebunkport is an astoundingly picturesque town. Historically a fishing village, in recent decades the town has become a popular seaside tourist destination with a small district of souvenir shops, art galleries, seafood restaurants, hotels, inns and bed & breakfasts. Its reputation as a superb community comes from the numerous large seaside estates along Ocean Avenue and other coastal thoroughfares. The famous "Bush Compound" is located on Walker's Point, a peninsula visible from Ocean Avenue. In the summer months, many people from across the Northeast vacation in Kennebunkport, Kennebunk and nearby Goose Rocks Beach.
Maine has more than 5000 miles of waterfront and The Kennebunks are bordered by some of the most beautiful and accessible beaches on the Atlantic Seaboard. Whether you’re just a lazy beachcomber hunting for shells or a surfer hoping to ride the perfect wave, the beaches are great for walking, sunbathing or playing in the sun.
